Documentary

Ever since Ramdas came into contact with the Ramnamis in the mid-1970s, he has been seeking to know the groups and its members as best as he can.  In the process, he has record his experiences and developed an understanding of them in writing as well as on film.  Initially, this was confined to still photos. In 1977, he shot his first moving footage of the group. On each subsequent return journey to Chhattisgarh, he has added to a growing collection of still and video footage of the group. This collection currently numbers several thousand still pictures and nearly 50 hours of video. In January 2002, Amita made her first journey to Chhattisgarh, and along with a small film crew, filmed at the Ramnamis' annual religious festival, as well as in several of their villages. In January 2003, we (Amita and Ramdas) returned to Chhattisgarh together, adding to our footage interviews with Ramnami elders and some important footage on the daily lives of some of the Samaj members. Again in the winter of 2004-5, we gathered more footage of interviews and Samaj activities. During the last several years, we have also begun the process of organizing and editing the footage for the documentary. This work has included digitizing archived footage to add to the more recent footage. Ramdas made his most recent return trip in late December, 2005, with the goal of shooting some final pivotal footage of the Samaj and some of its most senior members. Amita is now working to finish a rough cut that we hope to be able to show to selected individuals for input and suggestions. Finally, we hope to have the documentary ready for viewing by Fall, 2006.
